How to use the Artwords website.
There are many search techniques:
If you want a quick search then look through the left-hand flip chart.
Write the word in the Quick Search window and press OK or
ENTER - it will then jump to the word, click on it and the
entry and image of the subject will appear.
If you click on the caption over the image it will fill the whole screen.
If you would like to make a more complex search, then click the complex search
button to go to the next search site.
Complex Search
Here you can choose from words that appear in the text and their characteristics.
Characteristics are based on the type of work you are searching for. Here you
can choose from Styles (eg. Gothic) Genres
(eg. architecture) and Characteristics (eg. Function), or link
them all.
When you have chosen either Architecture, Sculpture
or Painting from the Genres you can go on to choose
Characteristics and Formal Characteristics.
After you have done this click on the search button. You will return to the main page where a list of entries, most suited for your purposes, can be found.
If you would like to look for a given word then write it in the by
word box. Click on search and it will find all the entries and captions
that include that word.
You can also do a search using both these methods.
Click the UNDO button to stop searching, and the Back button to return to the first page.
For Teachers
Artwords has many educational purposes; it is a digital teaching tool, which
can aid art, art history and cultural history lessons by providing quick background
information. Teachers can either use it in their lessons, or print it out for
themselves or for students. It can aid the analysis of new material, or summarize
and evaluate art works during lessons. With it students can discover works,
artists and architects for themselves, as well as genres, styles and periods
and the art historical links therein. It can be used in schools, at home and
for distance students. And can also help students studying for their GCSEs,
A levels and even university entrance exams or interviews.
Sources
Most of pictures and the sources for the entries come from Museum catalogues
and publications, as well as Art Dictionaries. These and the other sources used
are found in the Source notes.
Terms of Use
Artwords was set-up for educational use. The material can be downloaded but
only for private purposes, not commercial ones. Copyright permission must be
sought for all other uses or publication.
